At the heart of the Calverton community since 1876
For nearly 150 years, The Gleaners Inn has been offering locals a warm welcome and great hospitality.
A brief history of The Gleaners Inn
The Gleaners has deep roots in Calverton’s history, with mentions as far back as 1834. Originally, cottages were built near the Gleaners Inn to house framework knitters, a testament to the area’s industrial past. The inn stood alongside Windles Square, likely named after Mr. Windle, a builder from York. This area was established as a small community hub, somewhat separated from the main village at the time.
Since officially opening its doors in 1876, The Gleaners has been run by a colourful cast of publicans, victuallers, and even farmers. One notable figure, Thomas Taylor Fletcher, made headlines in 1883 for a run-in with Nottingham’s excise authorities over his ale recipe! Through the years, The Gleaners has transformed from a humble gathering spot into a cherished local landmark, preserving Calverton’s rich heritage in every brick.
